If you also want to stop changes, add a <strong>Password to modify<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>W\u00e4hlen Sie <strong>OK<\/strong> and enter the password again to confirm.<\/li>\n<li>Save the workbook.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Sheet and workbook protection work as on Windows: <strong>Review \u2192 Protect Sheet<\/strong> oder <strong>Review \u2192 Protect Workbook<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Can you password protect an Excel file in Excel for the web?<\/h2>\n<p>No. Excel for the web has no option to add a password to open, and it cannot open workbooks that are encrypted with a password. You have to download such a file and open it in the desktop app.<\/p>\n<p>What you can do online is control who gets access. In OneDrive or SharePoint, share the file with <strong>Can view<\/strong> instead of <strong>Can edit<\/strong>. With a Microsoft 365 subscription, OneDrive sharing links can also get an expiry date and a password.<\/p>\n<h2>How to protect a sheet or the workbook structure<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Protect a sheet but leave some cells editable:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Select the cells others may still fill in, right-click them and choose <strong>Format Cells \u2192 Protection<\/strong>. Untick <strong>Locked<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>W\u00e4hlen Sie <strong>Review \u2192 Protect Sheet<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Choose what others may still do, for example select cells, sort or use AutoFilter.<\/li>\n<li>Enter a password if you want one, select <strong>OK<\/strong> and confirm it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Protect the workbook structure:<\/strong> select <strong>Review \u2192 Protect Workbook<\/strong>, enter a password and confirm it. Microsoft points out that the password is optional, but without one anybody can remove the protection.<\/p>\n<p>Both are useful for templates, budgets and forms that several people fill in. They are not a way to keep data confidential.<\/p>\n<h2>How to remove a password from an Excel file<\/h2>\n<p>You need to know the current password for all of these steps:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Password to open on Windows:<\/strong> open the file, select <strong>File \u2192 Info \u2192 Protect Workbook \u2192 Encrypt with Password<\/strong>, delete the password, select <strong>OK<\/strong> and save.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Password to modify on Windows:<\/strong> open <strong>File \u2192 Save As \u2192 Tools \u2192 General Options<\/strong>, clear the field and save.<\/li>\n<li><strong>On a Mac:<\/strong> open <strong>File \u2192 Passwords<\/strong>, clear the fields, select <strong>OK<\/strong> and save.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sheet or workbook protection:<\/strong> select <strong>Review \u2192 Unprotect Sheet<\/strong> oder <strong>Review \u2192 Protect Workbook<\/strong> and enter the password.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If the password to open is lost, Microsoft cannot recover it. That is exactly what makes encryption useful \u2013 and why the password belongs in a password manager.<\/p>\n<h2>Five tips for passwords and sharing<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Use a long passphrase.<\/strong> Four or more random words are easier to remember and much harder to guess than a short password. A password manager can create and store it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Send the password separately.<\/strong> Never put the password in the same email as the file. Share it by text message or phone instead.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Know the trade-off with the cloud.<\/strong> Encrypted workbooks cannot be opened in Excel for the web, so AutoSave and real-time co-authoring in OneDrive or SharePoint do not work with them. For files a team edits together, control access with sharing permissions instead \u2013 or with sensitivity labels, which some Microsoft 365 business plans include.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Do not rely on sheet protection for secrets.<\/strong> It keeps formulas safe from accidental edits, nothing more.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Keep Excel up to date.<\/strong> Current versions use stronger encryption than very old releases.
