Robots in 2026: What Is Real, What Is Hype, and What You Can Actually Buy
Short answer: In 2026 robots are real, but the humanoid robot that tidies your house is not yet on sale in the UK. The verifiable picture as of 6 October 2026 looks like this: about 5 million industrial robots work in factories worldwide, professional service robots (mostly warehouse and delivery machines) sold almost 250,000 units in 2025, consumer robots such as vacuum cleaners and mowers sold 34.2 million – and only about 7,000 full-size humanoids were sold in the whole of 2025 (International Federation of Robotics, September 2026). Humanoids are working in a few car plants and warehouses, home humanoids are on pre-order with human remote operators behind them, and the robots you can actually buy today are specialised machines. The real progress in 2026 is in the software: AI models that let one robot learn many tasks, and fleet software that runs on ordinary PCs and servers.
What counts as a robot in 2026?
The industry splits robots into four groups, and the numbers only make sense if you keep them apart:
- Industrial robots – fixed or mobile arms in factories (welding, painting, assembly).
- Professional service robots – machines used by businesses outside the factory: warehouse transport, hospital logistics, cleaning, restaurant delivery, surgery.
- Consumer service robots – robots bought by households: vacuum and mop robots, lawn mowers, window cleaners, pool cleaners, companion robots.
- Humanoids – robots with a human-like body, usually two arms and either legs or a wheeled base, designed to work in spaces built for people.
The numbers: what actually shipped
The International Federation of Robotics (IFR) published its World Robotics 2026 figures on 24 and 30 September 2026. They are the closest thing to an official count.
| Category | 2025 figure (IFR, September 2026) | Change vs 2024 |
|---|---|---|
| Industrial robots in operation worldwide | 5 million units | +9% |
| New industrial robots installed in 2025 | over 600,000 units (China 354,000; USA 38,500; Germany 25,000) | +11% |
| Professional service robots sold | almost 250,000 units; logistics and transport 117,500 (47% share) | +24% |
| Surgical robots sold | 8,400 units | +57% |
| Consumer service robots sold | almost 34.2 million units | +37% |
| Full-size humanoids (above 140 cm) sold | about 7,000 units | n/a |
The gap between the last two rows is the whole story. Nearly every robot bought by a household in 2025 was a cleaning or garden machine; full-size humanoids were a rounding error by comparison, and none is yet sold as a finished household appliance. IFR’s forecast for 2026 is 655,000 new industrial robots, another 9 per cent rise.
Humanoid robots: real deployments versus promises
A humanoid in a factory is no longer a stunt. In late June 2026 BMW announced it would deploy Figure 03 humanoids at its Spartanburg plant in South Carolina for sorting parts into sequencing trolleys, after an eleven-month trial in which Figure 02 robots supported the production of more than 30,000 BMW X3 vehicles. In the UK, the London company Humanoid raised $152 million in July 2026 at a $1.35 billion valuation, is deploying its wheeled HMND 01 Alpha with early-access customers and plans beta robots from the fourth quarter of 2026.
Home humanoids are a different matter. The table below lists what we could verify.
| Robot | Maker | Price | Status on 6 October 2026 | Reality check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NEO | 1X (Norway/USA) | $20,000 or $499 a month | Pre-orders since 28 October 2025, deliveries scheduled for 2026, US first; other markets from 2027 | Unfamiliar tasks are handled by a 1X teleoperator who guides the robot remotely |
| Optimus | Tesla | Not announced for 2026 | Production “soon”, per the Q2 2026 earnings call (22 July 2026) | Musk: “the hardest product to scale manufacturing that we’ve ever made at Tesla” |
| Figure 03 | Figure AI | Not sold to consumers | Industrial deployment at BMW (June 2026) | Logistics work, not housework |
| R1 | Unitree (China) | $5,900 | On sale since July 2025 | Remote-controlled; autonomy needs your own programming |
| HMND 01 Alpha | Humanoid (London) | Not published | Early-access customers; beta from Q4 2026 | Wheeled base; aimed at logistics, manufacturing and retail |
Two things to notice. First, the cheapest humanoid you can buy, Unitree’s R1, is a research and hobby platform: out of the box it is driven by a remote control. Second, the home robots that promise chores rely on people behind the scenes. 1X is open about this: customers can schedule a human operator to steer NEO through a new task, and the robot learns from the demonstration. That is honest engineering, but it is not the autonomous butler of the adverts.
What you can actually buy for your home today
The useful home robots of 2026 are the unglamorous ones. The one genuinely new category is the vacuum robot with an arm: Roborock’s Saros Z70 costs £1,499 in the UK and uses a folding “OmniGrip” arm to move socks, slippers and tissues under about 300 grams out of its path. T3’s review (20 October 2025) called it “a genuine leap forward” but also “really, really slow” and recommended buying it for its cleaning rather than the arm. Robot mowers, window cleaners and pool robots have matured the same way: narrow jobs done reliably.
If you want to see where consumer robotics is heading, watch the warehouse. Amazon passed one million robots in its fulfilment network in July 2025 and introduced DeepFleet, an AI model that coordinates their routes and, by Amazon’s estimate, makes the fleet about 10 per cent faster. The same pattern – many simple machines, one clever piece of software – is what will eventually bring prices down at home.
Where the software and AI come in
The breakthrough of 2025–2026 is not a better motor. It is the “vision-language-action” model: a single AI model that watches through cameras, understands an instruction in plain language and outputs movements. Google DeepMind’s Gemini Robotics 2, announced in late July 2026, adds whole-body control, so a humanoid can “walk, crouch, stretch, and manipulate objects” rather than only moving its arms at a table; it was shown on Apptronik’s Apollo 2 and is available to early-access partners. NVIDIA announced an open Isaac GR00T reference humanoid on 31 May 2026 – a Unitree body, Sharpa hands and a Jetson Thor computer – for universities, with Jensen Huang describing humanoids as “opening a multitrillion-dollar economic opportunity”. IFR lists “robots gain versatility as IT meets OT” among its top trends for 2026: the information technology in the office is merging with the operational technology on the floor.
That matters for anyone who runs a business on Windows, because the robot is the smallest part of the system. Humanoid sells its KinetIQ software for orchestrating fleets; Amazon’s DeepFleet runs in the cloud; a Unitree R1 is programmed from a laptop. For a small firm, readiness for robots looks exactly like readiness for AI: tidy data, documented processes and up-to-date PCs and servers. Our guide to AI software automation for business covers that groundwork, and if you host fleet or warehouse software on your own hardware, our Windows Server 2025 vs 2022 comparison explains which edition fits.
What this means for UK homes and small businesses
- Do not wait for a humanoid. Nothing in the table above does your washing in Britain in 2026. Budget for a good cleaning robot if it saves you an hour a week; treat humanoid pre-orders as deposits on a promise.
- Service robots pay off where the job is repetitive and the floor is flat. IFR’s data shows logistics, hospitality and cleaning as the three largest professional categories. A café delivery robot or a warehouse cart is a 2026 purchase; a receptionist humanoid is a marketing expense.
- Prepare the software side first. Every robot ships with an app, a dashboard or an API that runs on an ordinary PC. A current Windows 11 machine with Pro features such as Remote Desktop and BitLocker – see our Windows 11 Pro licence – is the cheapest part of any automation project, and the one most often left until last.
- Watch the AI assistants, not the robots. The companies building robot brains also build the office assistants you already use. Our 2026 AI assistant comparison is a better guide to next year’s working day than any humanoid demo.
Frequently asked questions
Can I buy a humanoid robot in the UK in 2026?
You can order research platforms such as Unitree’s R1 ($5,900) or G1, but they arrive remote-controlled and need programming. Home humanoids such as 1X’s NEO are on pre-order with the US as the first market and other countries from 2027. No humanoid is sold in UK shops as a finished household appliance.
How many humanoid robots were sold in 2025?
About 7,000 full-size humanoids (above 140 cm) worldwide, according to the IFR’s World Robotics 2026 service robot report of 30 September 2026. Consumer robots, by contrast, sold almost 34.2 million units.
Is Tesla Optimus for sale?
No. At Tesla’s Q2 2026 earnings call on 22 July 2026, Elon Musk said production would start soon but warned that the early ramp would be “quite flat and long” because of the newness of the parts. No 2026 price or consumer sales date has been announced.
Do home robots really work on their own?
Partly. 1X says NEO handles basic tasks itself and that a remote human operator can take over unfamiliar ones, with the robot learning from the demonstration. Robot vacuums with arms, such as the Roborock Saros Z70, work autonomously but slowly and only with small, recognised objects.
Which robots are worth buying for a small business now?
The categories that grew fastest in 2025 are the safest bets: logistics and transport robots (117,500 units, +21 per cent), then hospitality and cleaning. Choose a machine with a clear single job and check what software it needs on your PCs before you sign.
What software do robots run on?
On the robot itself, typically an embedded computer such as NVIDIA’s Jetson Thor running AI models like Gemini Robotics or NVIDIA GR00T; research platforms such as the Unitree R1 are programmed with ROS 2. The management side – dashboards, scheduling, ERP links – runs on ordinary PCs, in the cloud or on a Windows server.
