Windows 11 26H2 (2026 Update) Is Here – and 24H2 Support Ends on 13 October 2026: What to Do Now

Short answer: Windows 11 version 26H2 – the “Windows 11 2026 Update” – reached general availability on 29 September 2026. It is a small enablement package, not a new operating system, and it resets your support clock: 24 months for Home and Pro, 36 months for Enterprise and Education. The date that matters more is 13 October 2026, when Windows 11 version 24H2 Home and Pro receive their final security update. The same day is the retirement date for Office 2021. If your PC still shows version 24H2, update to 25H2 or 26H2 before then; both are free. If you are on Windows 10, Microsoft’s free consumer Extended Security Updates now run to 12 October 2027, but that is a stopgap, not a plan.

What is Windows 11 version 26H2?

Windows 11, version 26H2 is the annual feature update for 2026. Microsoft describes it as bringing “together all the Windows innovations, security improvements, and enhancements delivered over the past year to version 25H2”. Because 24H2, 25H2 and 26H2 share the same code base and the same monthly cumulative update (the September 2026 preview, KB5124010, carries OS builds 26100, 26200 and 26300 in one package), moving to 26H2 “is as simple as installing a small enablement package, with a minimal download size”, in Microsoft’s words. One restart and the version number changes.

There are no features exclusive to 26H2. The update switches on functions that have already shipped through monthly updates and, for business PCs, turns on by default things such as Windows settings backup and the newer File Explorer. Windows Central summed up Microsoft’s own positioning on release day: a “predictable and low-disruption update” with no known compatibility concerns.

Why 13 October 2026 matters

Microsoft’s release-health page lists the end-of-updates dates for every Windows 11 version. Put next to the Office lifecycle, autumn 2026 looks like this:

“End of updates” means exactly that: a PC on 24H2 Home or Pro will install the October 2026 security update and then receive nothing further until it moves to a newer version. Windows itself keeps working, but every vulnerability found from November onwards stays open.

What is actually new in 26H2?

Microsoft’s IT-pro guide to 26H2 (dated 28 September 2026 and summarised by BetaNews on 1 October) groups the changes that the update consolidates into three areas:

• Security: Administrator Protection (just-in-time admin rights instead of a permanently elevated account), Sysmon event logging built into Windows but off by default, Smart App Control switchable without a clean install, support for the post-quantum algorithms ML-KEM and ML-DSA, and the end of default trust for cross-signed drivers.
• Management: point-in-time restore to roll a PC back to a recent restore point, Windows settings backup and restore extended to more account types, policy-based removal of preinstalled apps on Enterprise and Education, and Remote Server Administration Tools on Arm64.
• Everyday use: the redesigned Start menu with new views and sizing, more taskbar positioning options, File Explorer previews and archive formats, better Windows Search with typo tolerance, NPU usage in Task Manager, and upgraded Narrator, Magnifier and Voice Access.

Some of the AI items – the agent in Settings, for example – need a Copilot+ PC with a neural processor and will simply not appear on an ordinary laptop. If you have read our post on Windows 11 Pro vs Home, nothing in 26H2 changes that advice: the edition decides features such as BitLocker, Remote Desktop and Group Policy, not the version number.

How to check your version and install 26H2

1. Press the Windows key, type winver and press Enter. The dialog shows “Version 24H2”, “25H2” or “26H2” and the build number.
2. Open Settings > Windows Update. Switch on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available. Microsoft says this is what puts an eligible 24H2 or 25H2 PC at the front of the phased rollout.
3. Click Check for updates. When “Windows 11, version 26H2” appears, choose Download and install. The package is small; a single restart completes it.
4. If nothing is offered, wait. Microsoft says the rollout is phased and “will expand over the next few months”. Do not force the update with third-party tools on a PC you rely on.
5. Check the known issues first if you use specialist audio software: as of 2 October 2026 Microsoft confirmed that applications requiring AC-3 audio decoding “might close unexpectedly” on 26H2.

One exception: PCs that shipped with version 26H1 – the release for new Arm devices launched in February 2026 – cannot move to 26H2, because the two are built on different platforms. They stay on 26H1, which is supported until March 2028.

Update, wait or buy a new licence? Four scenarios

You are on Windows 11 24H2 Home or Pro

Update now. 25H2 and 26H2 are free, take minutes and carry your existing licence across. There is nothing to buy.

You are on Windows 11 25H2

You have until 12 October 2027. 26H2 is worth taking when it is offered – it is the same code with another year of support – but there is no urgency.

You are on Windows 10

Microsoft extended the free consumer Extended Security Updates to 12 October 2027 (announced on 25 June 2026), enrolment through a Microsoft account, Rewards points or a one-off fee. That buys time, but brings no new features and is not available for domain-joined or MDM-managed business PCs. If the hardware meets the Windows 11 requirements, a one-time licence for Windows 11 Pro (£19.95) or Windows 11 Home (£14.95) gets you onto a version that is supported until October 2028, with the key sent by email within about 60 seconds of payment and our lifetime activation guarantee if it ever fails to activate, even after a reinstall.

You run Office 2021

Office 2021 and Office LTSC 2021 reach their retirement date on 13 October 2026 under Microsoft’s lifecycle policy; after that there are no more security updates. The apps keep opening, but a mail client and a spreadsheet programme that stop receiving patches are a risk on any internet-connected PC. The successor with the longest runway is Office 2024, supported until 10 October 2029 – Office 2024 Professional Plus is £39.95 as a one-time payment, no subscription. If you are weighing that against Microsoft 365, our Office 2024 vs Microsoft 365 guide lays out the differences.

Häufig gestellte Fragen

Is Windows 11 26H2 a free update?

Yes. For any activated Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2 PC, 26H2 arrives through Windows Update at no cost and keeps the existing licence. Only PCs still on Windows 10 need a Windows 11 licence.

When does Windows 11 24H2 support end?

Home, Pro, Pro Education and Pro for Workstations editions receive their last update on 13 October 2026. Enterprise, Education and IoT Enterprise editions continue until 12 October 2027.

How long is Windows 11 26H2 supported?

Until 10 October 2028 for Home and Pro (24 months) and until 9 October 2029 for Enterprise and Education (36 months), according to Microsoft’s release information.

Does 26H2 have new system requirements?

No. It is an enablement package for PCs already running 24H2 or 25H2, so anything that runs those versions can install it. Only Copilot+ AI features depend on extra hardware.

Can I still use Office 2021 after 13 October 2026?

You can; it does not stop working. But Microsoft’s lifecycle page lists 13 October 2026 as the retirement date, after which there are no security fixes. For a one-time licence that stays supported, Office 2024 runs until October 2029.

My PC came with 26H1 – why is 26H2 not offered?

Microsoft states that devices on 26H1, the February 2026 release for new Arm hardware, cannot update to 26H2 because of platform differences. They remain supported on 26H1 until March 2028.
