Windows 11 Pro vs Home: Which Licence Should You Buy in 2026?

With Windows 10 support having ended on 14 October 2025, millions of people and businesses are moving to Windows 11 — and the very first decision is which edition to buy: Start or Pro. They look almost identical on the desktop, but Pro adds a layer of security, management and virtualisation tools that matter a great deal to some users and not at all to others. This guide gives you the honest difference so you buy the right one once.

Why this choice matters now

Windows 10 no longer receives free security updates. You can pay for Extended Security Updates as a short-term stopgap, but for most people the sensible move is a clean step up to Windows 11 on supported hardware. Choosing Home or Pro at that point decides which features you unlock — and paying for Pro when you only need Home (or vice versa) is the mistake we help customers avoid every day.

Windows 11 Home vs Pro at a glance

Everything in Home is also in Pro. These are the headline extras you only get with Windows 11 Pro:

What you get in both Home and Pro

For everyday computing, Home and Pro are the same experience. Both include the redesigned Start menu and taskbar, Snap layouts, virtual desktops, Microsoft Copilot, the Microsoft Store, Windows Security (antivirus and firewall), Windows Hello sign-in and the full set of built-in apps. If you browse, stream, work in Office, game and video-call, Home already does all of it.

What Windows 11 Pro adds — and who needs it

Pro is built for people who need to secure, manage or extend their PC:

• Security-conscious users and businesses: BitLocker drive encryption is the single biggest reason to choose a Windows 11 Pro key. If your device holds client data, financial records or anything confidential, encryption is close to essential.
• Remote workers: Remote Desktop lets you log into your office PC from home. Only Pro can be the machine you connect to.
• IT-managed environments: Group Policy, domain/Azure AD join and MDM let an organisation apply settings and policies across many devices.
• Developers and power users: Hyper-V runs virtual machines for testing, sandboxing and older software.

If none of those describe you, Home is the smarter buy — you would be paying for tools you will never open.

Which edition should you buy?

Häufig gestellte Fragen

Can I upgrade from Windows 11 Home to Pro later?

Yes. You can buy a Windows 11 Pro licence at any time and upgrade in place through Settings → System → Activation, without reinstalling Windows or losing your files. That said, buying the right edition from the start is cheaper and simpler.

Do I need Windows 11 Pro for working from home?

Only if you need to remotely connect into your PC, or you require BitLocker encryption for work data. If you simply use a laptop with Office, a browser and video calls, Home is fine. Pro becomes worthwhile the moment security or remote access matters.

Is Windows 11 Home safe without BitLocker?

Home still includes Windows Security (antivirus and firewall) and device encryption on many modern devices. But full BitLocker management — the gold standard for protecting a lost or stolen laptop — is Pro-only. For confidential data, that is the deciding factor.

Now that Windows 10 support has ended, do I have to upgrade?

Windows 10 stopped receiving free security updates on 14 October 2025. Your PC still works, but it no longer gets security patches unless you pay for Extended Security Updates. Upgrading to Windows 11 on supported hardware is the safest long-term move.

Will my programs and files transfer to Windows 11?

Upgrading from Windows 10 to Windows 11 keeps your files and most applications in place. As with any major upgrade, back up your important data first. If a key will not activate or you need help, our support team assists by email or WhatsApp at no extra cost.
