Windows Server: Was es ist, wie es funktioniert und warum es wichtig ist
“Windows Server” sounds technical, but the idea is simple: it is a version of Windows built to run services for many people at once rather than sit on one person’s desk. If your business shares files, manages user logins, hosts an application or runs virtual machines, there is a good chance Windows Server is doing the heavy lifting behind the scenes. Here is a plain-English explainer.
What is Windows Server?
Windows Server is Microsoft’s operating system for servers — the always-on computers that provide services to other devices on a network. It looks familiar if you have used Windows, but it is tuned for reliability, security and running around the clock, and it can support far more memory and processing power than desktop Windows. Instead of one user, it serves dozens, hundreds or thousands of connections.
What does it actually do?
Windows Server runs “roles” — jobs you switch on as needed. The common ones:
Active Directory
Manages user accounts, logins and permissions across the whole organisation.
File & print server
Central, secure storage and shared printers for the team.
Applications & databases
Hosts line-of-business apps, websites and databases.
Virtualisation (Hyper-V)
Runs several virtual servers on one physical machine to save cost and space.
Why it matters for your business
As soon as more than a handful of people need to share resources securely, a server pays for itself. Windows Server gives you central control (one place to manage users and security), reliability (built to run continuously), and room to grow (add roles and capacity as you scale). It is the backbone that keeps files, logins and applications available and protected.
Editions and licensing in brief
Windows Server comes in Standard (for physical or lightly virtualised servers, with rights for two virtual machines) and Datacenter (unlimited virtual machines, for virtualisation hosts and private clouds). It is licensed per physical core, and each connecting user or device needs a Client Access Licence (CAL). We break the choice down in our Windows Server 2025 vs 2022 guide.

Häufig gestellte Fragen
What is Windows Server used for?
Windows Server runs shared services for a network: managing user logins with Active Directory, storing and sharing files, hosting applications, websites and databases, and running virtual machines. It is designed to serve many devices at once, reliably and securely.
What is the difference between Windows Server and Windows 11?
Windows 11 is a desktop operating system for one user’s PC. Windows Server is built to provide services to many devices on a network, supports far more hardware, and includes server roles like Active Directory and Hyper-V that desktop Windows does not.
Do small businesses need Windows Server?
Once several people need to share files, printers and secure logins centrally, a server becomes worthwhile. Very small teams may manage with cloud services, but many small businesses benefit from the central control and reliability Windows Server provides.
How is Windows Server licensed?
It is licensed per physical core, with a minimum number of cores per server, and each connecting user or device needs a Client Access Licence (CAL). Standard and Datacenter editions differ mainly in virtual-machine rights.
What is a CAL?
A Client Access Licence (CAL) permits a user or device to connect to the server. It is separate from the server licence itself, so you budget for the server plus a CAL for each person or device that will use it.
