Office 2024 vs Microsoft 365: One-Time Purchase or Subscription?
Microsoft gives you two very different ways to own Office, and the right one can save you hundreds of pounds over a few years. Office 2024 is a one-time purchase you keep forever. Microsoft 365 is a subscription you pay for every month or year. Both put Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook on your device — but the way you pay, and what you get, pulls them apart. Here is the honest comparison.
The two models in one minute
Office 2024 — buy once
A perpetual licence. One payment, installed on one PC or Mac, valid for the life of the device. No monthly bill, no expiry date. You keep the apps you paid for.
Microsoft 365 — subscribe
An ongoing subscription. Always the newest features, 1 TB of OneDrive storage and multi-device installs — but the apps stop working the moment you stop paying.
The three-year maths
This is where the difference becomes real money. A rough, honest comparison over three years:
- Microsoft 365 Personal: billed every year, so the cost keeps climbing — three years means paying three times, and it never stops.
- Office 2024: paid once. After year one you pay nothing more, and the apps keep running for as long as your computer does.
For anyone who mainly needs Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook on a single machine, the perpetual licence is usually far cheaper over time. The subscription only pulls ahead when you genuinely use its extras.
When the subscription genuinely wins
Microsoft 365 is the better buy if you actually use what it adds:
- You want the latest features the moment they ship — Office 2024 keeps its feature set; 365 keeps evolving.
- You need 1 TB of cloud storage and heavy OneDrive/cloud collaboration.
- You install across many devices — several PCs, Macs, tablets and phones per user.
- You are a growing team that values central admin, shared mailboxes and business services.
If that list sounds like you, the subscription earns its keep. If it does not, you are renting features you never touch.
Standard or Professional Plus?
If you choose the one-time route, there are two main editions:
Office 2024 Standard
Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote — everything most people and small offices need.
Office 2024 Professional Plus
Adds Access and Publisher — the choice for power users and businesses that need database and publishing tools.

Frequently asked questions
Is Office 2024 a one-time purchase?
Yes. Office 2024 is a perpetual licence: you pay once and keep the apps for the lifetime of the device, with no monthly fee and no expiry date. It does not receive new feature updates the way Microsoft 365 does, but it keeps working indefinitely.
What happens to my documents if I cancel Microsoft 365?
Your files are always yours — they stay on your device and in your OneDrive. However, the Microsoft 365 apps switch to read-only mode when the subscription lapses, so you can open and print but not edit until you resubscribe or install a perpetual licence like Office 2024.
Can I use Office 2024 on more than one computer?
A single Office 2024 licence covers one PC or Mac. If you need Office on several machines, you can buy a licence per device or consider Microsoft 365, which allows multi-device installs per user. For one main computer, the perpetual licence is the most economical.
Which is cheaper over time, Office 2024 or Microsoft 365?
For a single device used mainly for the core apps, Office 2024 is usually cheaper over a few years because you pay only once. Microsoft 365 can be better value if you genuinely use its cloud storage, multi-device installs and constant feature updates.
Do I get Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook with both?
Yes. Both Office 2024 and Microsoft 365 include Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. The differences are in how you pay, whether you get new features over time, and the cloud and multi-device extras that come with the subscription.
