Standard or Datacenter – which edition do you need?
Both editions contain the same server roles: Active Directory, file and print services, Hyper-V, IIS, DNS, DHCP and everything else you expect. The difference is virtualisation rights.
- Windows Server Standard permits a small number of virtual instances per licensed host. It is the right choice for a physical server, a domain controller, a file server, or an environment with only a couple of virtual machines.
- Windows Server Datacenter permits unlimited virtual instances on the licensed host and adds features aimed at highly virtualised environments, such as Storage Spaces Direct and Software-Defined Networking. If you run many VMs on one host, Datacenter usually works out cheaper than stacking Standard licences.
Which release: 2019, 2022 or 2025?
Windows Server 2025 is the current release and the sensible default for a new deployment – it carries the longest remaining support window and brings improvements in security hardening, hotpatching and storage performance. Windows Server 2022 remains an excellent, thoroughly proven platform and is the value choice for most small businesses. Windows Server 2019 is still supported under extended support and is worth considering when you need to match an existing estate or a specific application requirement.
A practical rule: match the release to the oldest application you must run, then take the newest version that application supports.
